Chapter Summary Edit
In the Square of Marshals, Glokta and Ardee are in the massive crowd awaiting the execution of Tulkis, the Gurkish Ambassador for the supposed murder of Prince Raynault. Severard interrupts to bring Glokta news of his investigations. Firstly, he followed Vitari home, and discovered that she is a mother of three children; undoubtedly, the reason her desperation to return from Dagoska. Glokta files it away for future leverage. And secondly, the Prince’s guard cannot be found. He hasn’t been seen by his family since the day before the Raynault’s death, which is strange considering Glokta saw him grieving at his post the night of the murder. Glokta orders Severard to keep looking. Tulkis is escorted to the executioner, and hung and emptied. As he’s dying, Glokta admits to Ardee that Tulkis is not the murderer. She’s shocked and wonders who really did the deed.
Back at Ardee’s home, the pair chat amicably. Ardee asks how the succession to the throne will work now. Glokta explains that on the King’s death there will be a vote in Open Council, meaning a long period of back stabbing and deal making, and then a vote. Ardee wonders who might be the favourites and offers up Lord Brock, then Heugen, Isher, and Skald. Glokta smiles at her intelligence and agrees. He suggests though that a compromise candidate may be found, someone relatively unknown who none of the factions fear, or even the rumoured bastard of the King’s former lover Carmee dan Roth.
A knock at the door interrupts them, and Mauthis from Valint & Balk is escorted in. He requests Glokta immediately stop his private investigation into the Prince’s death. Taken aback, Glokta first tries to deny it, and then asks why the banking house cares. With fear in his eyes and no small amount of pleading, Mauthis replies only by saying that Glokta does not want to find out what will happen if he denies the request. Realizing that he is bought and paid for, Glokta agrees.

- We see a burgeoning mutual respect between Glokta and Ardee. Glokta is kind to Ardee. He makes no demands on her other than friendship, and even that he hardly expects much. Banter that just barely borders on flirtation. It’s such an incredible characterisation.
