Practical Severard leads Glokta to a dilapidated mansion in an unsavoury neighbourhood, where they will work until the spy within the Inquisition is uncovered. In the cellar awaits the Mercers’ assassin, Carpi, who has been caught in their sting operation with Salem Rews. Rews is also there, locked away, but still alive. The cellar is decorated with a mural of the Master Maker Kanedias killing Bayaz’ master Juvens, and eleven of the twelve Magi marching to avenge him. Glokta takes some pliers and begins to torture Carpi by pulling out his teeth. He wants names, starting with the name of the man who hired him.
