|“||It may be that in the future, a representative of the banking house of Valint and Balk will come to you requesting… favours. It is the most earnest hope of my employers that, if and when that times comes, you will not disappoint them.||”|
Chapter Summary Edit
The situation in the city has improved, thanks largely to the native population; the outer walls are fixed, the ditch is re-dug, the moat ready to be flooded, and the food stores are full. However, the Ruling Council is now some half-a-million marks in debt, a staggering sum. A sum not even the Guild of Spicers can help with, since Magister Eider has only raised 12,000 marks, but generously offers her own jewels to the cause.
The situation seems dire, until a man named Mauthis walks into Glokta’s office. Mauthis is the chief representative of Valint & Balk in Dagoska.1 He offers Glokta one million marks in silver, gold, and precious gems. Not a loan in the traditional sense, Glokta can have the money in return for unspecified future favours for the banking house. With no other choice, the Superior agrees.

- It's interesting how Valint & Balk seemingly wield an absurd amount of economic and social power, and yet Glokta, a relatively well-informed member of the ruling elite, is barely aware of them.
