Chapter Summary Edit
At night, Glokta is startled awake again by a mysterious figure in his room and an icy cold. The woman’s voice demands The Seed. He protests that only Bayaz knows but the woman says if that old lier had it, she would take it from him. Then she simply disappears, leaving Glokta disoriented about whether it was a dream.
The next morning, Glokta and Sult stare at their election board for the crown. After months of work, the votes controlled by the leading contenders are much the same. They don’t have enough to influence the election. Glokta wonders if it’s all for naught, given the information from Carlot dan Eider that the Gurkish are coming, while The Union squabbles over scraps. Glokta tries to share the rumour with the Arch Lector, but Sult mocks it when he cannot explain the source. Next, Glokta proposes a radical plan — if they throw their votes in with Sult's enemy Marovia, they would have enough votes. Sult reluctantly agrees, and sends Glokta to meet with him.
In the High Justices’s private office, Glokta makes the offer. If Sult and Marovia combine the votes they control they can put a weaker contender on the throne; it’s the best thing for the members of the Closed Council. After a great deal of verbal sparing, the pair agree. If a suitable candidate presents themselves, they will combine their votes. Glokta has impressed Marovia.
Meanwhile, Glokta has had his Practicals arrest Brother Longfoot; the Inquisition needs to know what Bayaz is after, and Longfoot is the only one that won’t be missed. Back in the dilapidated mansion, Glokta puts the navigator to the question. After hammers and toes, Longfoot knows nothing interesting, except that Khalul’s apprentice Mamun has bribed the Order of Navigators to learn of Bayaz’ journey, and know Bayaz’ doesn’t have The Seed.2 Interesting, but not enough to buy Longfoot’s freedom.
