Chapter Summary Edit
Travelling north, Yulwei and Ferro are questions by a Gurkish soldier about an escaped slave armed with a bow. Hidden behind the Magus’ power, Ferro appears to be a dimwitted boy, not even worth recruiting into the army, which is preparing for war against The Union in Dagoska.
Waved along, Ferro wonders at their destination, and Yulwei reveals that he is taking her to Adua by way of Dagoska. Despite Ferro’s willingness to follow him out of the desert, she’s reticent about going to The Union which for her is full of “Godless pinks”. She argues that she has unfinished business with Gurkish and Uthman-ul-Dosht. However, Yulwei mocks her notion of killing the Emperor and insists Ferro owes him.
Reaching the coast, Yulwei observes hidden harbours with scores of Gurkish ships. The Gurkish may be planning more than just retaking Dagoska. Yulwei redoubles their pace.2 Nearing Dagoska, they are forced off the road by a Gurkish caravan of slaves. The new Emperor has ruthlessly crushed a rebellion in Kadir, and taken the people as slaves. Ferro watches with impotent rage as the slaves are whipped along the road, as they once did to her. The soldiers even offer to sell her a slave-girl, forcing Yulwei to restrain Ferro from killing him to fill her hollowed out emotional state.3
