|“|| Whirrun: I slice the bread thin, d’you see?|
Wonderful: Sliced bread? Can’t see it catching on, can you?
Chapter Summary Edit
At dawn on the second day of the Battle of the Heroes, Curnden Craw drags himself from his bed. He finds most of the crew gathered around a meagre fire eating breakfast, with Whirrun of Bligh trying to convince the others of the genius of his new invention; sliced bread.1 However, when Wonderful goes to wake-up Brack, she finds that he has died in the night from his leg wound. Later, Craw says the words over Brack’s grave, wondering just how many more of these he can stand.
Meanwhile, Finree dan Brock rouses her husband Hal, who startles awake realising it’s already dawn and he’s late. As the son of a notorious traitor, he must work twice as hard as anyone else to retain his position. He sees the way to succeed is hard work, loyalty and doing the right thing, while Finree has a different philosophy; she schemes to use Colonel Brint and his friendship with the king to remove Meed. The two almost get into an argument, but Finree, realising her husband will be in danger today, quickly relents.
Beyond the bogs, Corporal Tunny has had a good night sleep, being well practiced at sleeping in any situation. But he’s appalled when he wakes to find his new recruits are actually trying to light a fire, with the Northmen mere yards away. After admonishing them, he learns that they still haven't received any orders, so he settles back again to sleep.
Elsewhere, Calder wakes from a nightmare of the day he ordered Forley the Weakest killed, to find his brother Scale sitting by his bedside. Calder tries to justify to his brother his talk of peace the previous night, but Scale quickly slaps him down and makes him realise that this is The North and men will only follow someone with iron in him. Calder is left in command of the wall, with orders to reinforce the bridgehead should Scale need him.
