“ | Dog can’t hold a knife, though, can it? | ” |
Fair Treatment is the twenty-third chapter of The Heroes.
Chapter Summary
Beck marches sourly towards Osrung, bitter at having missed the battle. Arriving however, he has to try and put on a brave face as his stomach turns at the sight of all the corpses. While Flood goes to get some orders, the little crew is left to guard some Union prisoners. When one of the captives, a Northman loyal to The Dogman, derides them as a bunch of boys with no Names, Beck takes to making him shut-up with his boot. He's interrupted by a big man with a hideous scar across one side of his face; Caul Shivers. As Shivers is selecting The Union officer to bring to Black Dow, another Northman prisoner mocks him, calling him "Black Dow's dog". Shivers unhurriedly hunches down in front of him, and calmly pokes him all over with a small eating knife. He then simply shrugs and walks off with his prisoner, as the Northman bleeds to death.
