|“||I might use my subtle feminine wiles… to entrap a third man, still more powerful and wealthy. Young, and handsome, and smooth of limb as well, I suppose, since this is a metaphor. I would marry him and with his help destroy those other two, and abandon them penniless and disappointed. Ha! What think you?”||”|
Chapter Summary Edit
Superior Glokta sits in his torture room, engaged in the noble work of eliciting confessions from supposed Gurkish sympathizers. His latest victim is Farrad, the most famous dentist in Adua. Farrad is incredulous at the charges, he hates the Gurkish, and fled Kanta when they conquered Yashtavit. Farrad is asked to confess and name two others conspirators. When he refuses, Glokta forces his mouth open and threatens to pull his teeth. Farrad’s body deflates, and he agrees to sign his confession.
As Farrad is escorted out, his eminence the Arch Lector enters. Sult erupts at Glokta for his lack of progress investigating the First of the Magi and the so-called illegitimate son of King Guslav. Under orders from Valint & Balk to discontinue this line of questioning, Glokta has little to report. Sult is reaching the end of his patience with Glokta, and seems to know much more about what really happened in Dagoska than he really should. But how?
Dejected, Glokta goes to visit Ardee West. He expects to see her preparing to leave the city before the Gurkish arrive. However, Ardee isn’t going to leave, she has nowhere to go. Glokta relents, and instead asks her advice on his current predicament, using the analogy of a pair of rich and powerful suitors. Ardee ponders for a while, and in a flash of inspiration suggests finding a third suitor, richer and more powerful to destroy the pair. Glokta is taken aback by the cleverness of the idea.1
