Chapter Summary Edit
Just outside Dagoska, Yulwei is concerned about sneaking them both through so many Gurkish soldiers and Eaters converging on the city. After making Ferro promise to wait for him, Yulwei scouts ahead. Ferro, ignoring her promise, immediately flees. Using a river to obscure her trail, she eventually stops for the night.
She is woken by the sound of voices, a brother and sister searching for her on the orders of Khalul. Ferro bolts like a frightened rabbit, but the terrain is very open, and four soldiers begin to run her down. Ferro turns and kills three of soldiers with her bow, before cutting down the last. The brother and sister look on impressed but unconcerned. The brother moves toward Ferro, undaunted by her arrows that hit him; an Eater to be sure. He easily disables Ferro, and they both mock her efforts to escape them.
As Ferro begins to lose consciousness, they hear a commanding voice; Yulwei. He admonishes the brother and sister for breaking Euz’s law1, and offers them a chance to flee. When they refuse, he attacks with his Art, turning the sister’s bones to water, and burns the brother from within. Ferro recovers remarkably quickly from her injuries, as she always does, though she doesn’t know why. She finally admits that she cannot survive without Yulwei.
