Long Shadows is the twelfth chapter in Before They Are Hanged.
Chapter Summary
Logen and Ferro stare open mouthed at the mighty river Aos. Having questioned why they needed a bridge to cross, Logen now wonders how one would even build a bridge over such a river.
Suddenly, Ferro spies a group of nearly forty riders in the distance. The crew take refuge in a massive ruin; not a former city, but the Winter Palace of the past Empire.1 Inside, Bayaz discovers a mural depicting the story of Glustrod. He again stops at the point where Glustrod digs for something in the earth. While they wait, Longfoot teases Jezal for always sharpening his swords but never using them, and Jezal demonstrates that he certainly can use them … at least on an apple. The riders eventually pass, allowing them to continue their journey.

References
- Bayaz explains that the Winter Palace was destroyed, not in Glustrod’s war, but rather in the war between the Magi and Kanedias after the Maker killed Juvens. We still know very little about this war, but Bayaz describes it as even more terrible than the previous.
- We also get the little titbit that Logen’s sword, the least of Kanedias' creations, despite looking like a dull plain weapon never needs sharpening, yet has an edge that could part silk.
