New Hands is the seventh chapter of The Heroes.
Chapter Summary Edit
Beck, a seventeen year old Northern lad, spends his days helping his mother on the farm, while dreaming of the glorious life of a warrior, like his renowned father Shama Heartless, who died at the hands of the Bloody-Nine. Now those are some heroic Names, and Beck wants one for himself. When he hears that Caul Reachey is holding a weapon-take in the village, he gathers his meagre belonging and his father’s sword. As he turns to leave, he runs into his mother. He expects her to stop him from going, but she just sighs, kisses his forehead, and gives him her best warm cloak.
Nevertheless, the weapon-take isn’t what Beck was expecting. The others are all young boys and cripples, apart from another lad his age called Reft. While he waiting to sign him mark, Beck sees a rider passing through camp in a fine fur collared cloak and a smirk at the corner of his mouth; Calder. When Beck finally gets to the front of the line, giving his name and lineage, the warriors gape in wonder at the son of such a famed fighter. He's signed up to little crew under a man named Flood; a member of Curnden Craw's dozen on light duty owing to an injured leg.
