Chapter Summary Edit
Ordered by Arch Lector Sult to arrest all the Mercers implicated by Salem Rews, Sand dan Glokta creeps into Villen dan Robb’s townhouse1, accompanied by Practicals Frost and Severard. After entering, Frost clears the lower level, while Severard investigates upstairs. The need for stealth is quickly abated when Severard discovers Robb has been murdered.
While Robb’s death seems an inconvenience, it proves no coincidence, when the next name on Rews’ list, Solimo Scandi, is also found dead. Glokta reasons that there must be a mole within the Inquisition who’s alerted the Mercers, and they are now ruthlessly cleaning house.
Glokta arranges to meet Arch Lector Sult in a park to point out that everyone on the list is dead. Sult agrees with Glokta that a mole is likely, but balks at his accusing Superior Kalyne. A sting operation is concocted to use Salem Rews to trap the Mercers’ assassin and the Inquisition mole.
After Sult leaves, Lord Marshall Varuz strolls up and awkwardly asks his former fencing student to help him with Jezal. Despite Jezal’s talent, he is unwilling to commit himself to his steels as Glokta did years ago. Despite resenting Varuz for speaking to him only when he needs something, Glokta agrees2.

- This chapter speaks to Glokta’s character, about how he’s continued to serve despite his tortured body. Glokta finds pride in his mental fencing as much as he ever did in his actual sword work.
- This again highlights how Glokta is treated as a pariah since his return from Gurkish prison, even by his former associates.
