|“||Who is the traitor? Tell me, you riddling bastard!1||”|
Chapter Summary Edit
In the black of night, Glokta wakes from a ghastly nightmare of his colleagues in Dagoska eating him one piece at a time. Outside a terrible storm is raging. A fork of lightning illuminates his room to reveal an old black man with long matted hair sat cross-legged on the carpet; Yulwei.
Yulwei explains that he is a Magus, and brings news: the Gurkish have used the cover of the storm to close the noose on Dagoska; even the five standards of the vanguard of the Emperor’s horde number 20,000 spears; the Gurkish also now have a navy, upsetting the balance of power at sea; and behind it all march Khalul’s army of Eaters, The Hundred Words. The Superior is somewhat sceptical, and demands to know who killed his predecessor. Yulwei declares that there is an Eater in Dagoska who killed Davoust to protect the identity of a traitor. Then Magus then promptly disappears without another word.
The next morning, Yulwei proves correct; outside the great wall of Dagoska are the five banners of the Gurkish vanguard. Seeing Yulwei in a different light, Glokta orders a wall built at the docks to protect the city from the sea.
