Chapter Summary Edit
Logen and his men reach the Agriont where the Gurkish are gathered in great numbers. The Northmen charge, and the Gurkish respond in kind. In the chaos, Logen is knocked to the ground, and he rises as the Bloody-Nine with The Dogman in his sights.1
Meanwhile, Glokta strides through the streets toward the University. He passes the Square of Marshals where Bayaz and Ferro stand amidst rings of sawdust, but Cosca ushers him onwards, insisting one enemy at a time. Moments later they run into King Jezal. Glokta gawps in puzzlement at supposedly dead Marovia at the back of his entourage. As they rush on in opposite directions, Ardee and Jezal’s eyes lock on each other for a long moment. However, suddenly the world explodes, as the Gurkish blasting-powder breaches the Agriont.
Also approaching the Agriont, Lord Marshal West surveys the progress of the battle. General Kroy reports that, at great cost, the Union Army has pressed north, but the Gurkish still surround the seat of power. When West reports that Poulder is dead, Kroy seems to take it very hard. Just then, the Gurkish explosion rocks them as well.
The same shockwave goes through the Bloody-Nine also, knocking something in his head, and returning Logen to himself. With the chaos of masonry debris crashing around them, the fight has gone out of both sides.
Inside the Square of Marshals, after the explosion an eerie silence descends. Stepping from it are Khalul’s hundred, led by Mamun. Bayaz orders Ferro to opens the box and take out The Seed. Mamun taunt Bayaz, accusing him of murdering Juvens, a fact Bayaz does not entirely deny.2 As they move to attack, Bayaz begins to pull on the power of The Seed, and a wind starts to blow.

- Mamun accuses Bayaz of murdering Juvens himself, and Bayaz doesn’t refute it entirely, which is tantamount to an admittance. We get no explanation for why, other than that Juvens was an idealist, which Bayaz disagreed with. You cannot save the world that way. The victor writes history.
- For a moment there we feared for the worst. Logen is the Bloody-Nine about to cave Dogman's brains in. We can't help remembering Tul Duru's death.
