|“|| Cosca: Ah! That was… ungracious of you, Friendly.|
Friendly: Oh. I thought… you know. Follow your lead. I was being first sergeant.
Cosca: Of course you were. I take all the blame myself. I should have been more specific. I have ever suffered from… unspecificity? Is that a word?
Chapter Summary Edit
On the day of battle, on the eastern shore of the river, Grand Duke Rogont gives a rousing speech to his Osprian soldiers preparing for the engagement to come. Monza gives him little hope, saying he should have attacked long before this. However, Rogont just gives her a knowing smile. As the Talinese cross the lower ford, the Osprian forces meet them in battle with foot and archers.
Meanwhile in The Thousand Swords' encampment at the upper ford, Nicomo Cosca is dressed to the nines like a pimp who lost his mind in a military tailor’s. However, the mercenary company waiting, and they waiting. Eventually, Colonel Rigrat storms into the camp to demand that he proceed with the attack. Cosca leads him into his tent with Captain Andiche. Cosca reveals that he has taken money from the Gurkish not to attack. As Rigrat squares up to Cosca, First Sergeant Friendly disarms him. Suddenly, Cosca inexplicably runs Andiche through, and Friendly follows his lead and kills Rigrat. Then Cosca runs from the tent claiming that Andiche gave his life to save him from Rigrat.
Back on the eastern shore, Monza is just wondering why Cosca hasn’t attacked, when a Sipanese army suddenly appears on the horizon. Gloating at his own cleverness, Rogont explains that he brought Chancellor Sotorius over to his side, after Monza killed Orso’s son in Sipani. And thanks to his Gurkish friends, they managed to buy-off The Thousand Swords. However, the smugness is soon swept from his face as the Osprians forces at the lower ford begin to break. Duke Rogont considers retreat, but Monza scoffs at his caution. She gathers the cavalry and charges into the fray. In the middle of the melee, Monza goes down in the river, but Shivers drags her up and dives back into the fight axe swinging.
Back in The Thousand Swords' encampment, Cosca watches as Monza's charge has turned the tide of the battle, by delaying the Talinese long enough for the Sipanese to join the fray. He orders the mercenaries into the rout of Duke Orso's army.
