Paths of Glory is the twentieth chapter of The Heroes.
Chapter Summary Edit
Corporal Tunny and his new recruits find themselves leading the way for the entire regiment through the bogs west of the Old Bridge. With mud up to their knees on the best path, Klige strays away from the safe path to retrieve one of his boots. Suddenly, he gets sucked down into the mud to his death, while everyone stands helpless. Reaching their position to the flank of the bridge, Tunny curses the tragic loss; not the appalling death of the new recruit, but his stash of brandy that Klige was carrying for him.
However, Tunny is in for a shock when he takes a look at the sight beyond the trees; Northmen, a lot of bloody Northmen. Clearly there has been quite a battle, and the Northmen have captures the north bank of the river. Tunny tries to order Yolk to go back through the bog and let the high command know the situation. However, Yolk, distressed at the death of Klige, craftily convinces Tunny to send Lederlingen instead, by giving him a bottle of brandy he’d saved.
