Paths of Glory is the twentieth chapter of The Heroes.
Chapter Summary Edit
Corporal Tunny and his raw recruits find themselves leading the way for the entire regiment through the bogs west of the Old Bridge. With mud up to their knees on the best path, Klige strays away from the path to retrieve his lost boot. Suddenly there's a squelching sound, and he gets sucked down into the mud to his death. All Tunny can do is stand helpless. Reaching a dry position on the flank of the bridge, Tunny curses the tragic loss; not the appalling death of Klige, but the stash of brandy that his new recruit was carrying for him.
Meanwhile, Tunny is in for a shock when he takes a look at the sight beyond the trees; Northmen, a lot of bloody Northmen. Clearly there's been quite a battle, and the Northmen have captured the northern bank of the river. Tunny tries to order Yolk to go back through the bog to warn the high command of the situation. However, Yolk, distressed at the death of Klige, craftily convinces Tunny to send Lederlingen instead, by giving him a bottle of brandy he’d saved.
