Chapter Summary Edit
All-powerful Arch Lector Glokta carefully lowers himself into his chair at the much reduced Closed Council. First, General Kroy reports on the state of the war on the behalf of an ever worsening Lord Marshal West. The Gurkish army has been utterly routed, so much so that they’re struggling to feed all the prisoners. As others propose mercy, Bayaz blithely urges leaving them to die. It is left to the cripple to pronounce the final sentence; “Let them starve.”
The conversation turns to raising money for the massive rebuilding program needed in Adua, mainly funded by clamping down on the nobles and loans from Valint & Balk. King Jezal sits largely ignored throughout, until the topic turns to Lord Brock. Brock himself has fled to Gurkhul, but his son and daughter are imprisoned. As the Arch Lector begins to plans a couple of public executions, the King proves that he not quite house-broken, by demanding the children are set free; there’s been enough bloodshed already.1
As the council breaks up, Lord Chamberlain Hoff pulls Glokta aside for a quiet word. He reveals that Ardee West is pregnant with King Jezal’s child, which could be used to damage the King’s position. The Arch Lector insists he will deal with the matter himself.
His heart was pounding, Glokta visits Ardee in her townhouse. As they make their usual small talk, Glokta slide his hand into his pocket, and feels the cold hard metal of the thing he carries. Suddenly, he lurches towards her, snatching from his pocket … a diamond wedding ring.2 He must marry her to protect her and her unborn baby. Surprisingly, she agrees without protest; he was after all, the man of her dream when she was young.

- One of these children is Harod dan Brock who would go on to appear in The Heroes.
- Personally this little scenes is one of my favourites, the twist totally got me. So ... perfect ... in every way. Ardee and Glokta. Neither would have chosen the other, but they somehow fit together. Ardee will probably be happier with him, than she ever would have been with Jezal.
