Prepared For The Worst is the nineteenth chapter in Last Argument of Kings.
Chapter Summary
Superior Glokta is in his room playing with the jewels from Valint & Balk, when there’s a pounding at the door. He scrambles to hide the evidence before opening to door to reveal Arch Lector Sult and half a dozen Practicals. Glokta worries that perhaps he’s been discovered, but the agitated Arch Lector quickly begins raging at Bayaz’ influence in court. Now on solid footing, Glokta attempts to appease Sult with the information learned from Longfoot, but the leader of the Inquisition is having none of it. He angrily orders Glokta to look into Bayaz and whether Jezal is truly Guslav’s bastard.
Later that night, Glokta walks through the House of Questions, where many of Lord Brock’s supporters have been arrested for disputing the election. Meeting with Severard, they discuss how to find more information about Bayaz. The Magus himself is untouchable, the Navigator is useless, the Northman is gone; that only leaves Ferro. Glokta orders Severard to follow her, despite the Practicals reservations.
Glokta’s last meeting of the day is in a seedy bar on the wrong side of Adua. There he meets Nicomo Cosca, who despite all odds managed to survive the fall of Dagoska. Glokta buys the man’s loyalty with a diamond and orders Cosca to recruit some bad men. The Gurkish are coming and Glokta means to be ready.
