|“|| Cosca: Besides, I gave my life for you!|
Monza: You didn’t fucking die!
Cosca: Well. Rumours of my death are often exaggerated. Wishful thinking, on the part of my many enemies.
Monza: I’m beginning to know how they feel.
Chapter Summary Edit
The battle over, Caul Shivers sits outside the barn, surrounded by the corpses of dead mercenaries. Suddenly, he hears the sound hoofbeats as Monza approaches, and announces Faithful Carpi dead. Soon Vitari joins them, and brings them to see Day’s corpse. Morveer himself has disappeared and it seems clear that he intends to betray Monza. With half of Styria and now a poisoner after them, Vitari announces that she’s had enough and is leaving. Monza reluctantly agrees and pays her what she’s owed. As Vitari leaves, Ishri appears and gives Monza a sample of the money to buy the loyalty of The Thousand Swords.
Monza rides into the mercenaries encampment, with Shivers at her side. She strides into the command tent as if she owns it, where the three senior captains Sesaria, Victus, and Andiche are sitting. Monza proclaims that they need a new captain general, or maybe they should reinstate an old one. With a knowing smile, Andiche agrees. Suddenly Nicomo Cosca strolls into the tent, and casually seats himself in the captain generals chair, with Friendly at his side. He explains that the Talinese troops burst into the palace moments after they left, and seeing him dressed in their uniform, they rushed him to an excellent surgeon who saved his life. Monza sputters and tries to persuade them to switch to Duke Rogont, but Cosca has already signed-up the company with the clearly stronger Grand Duke Orso. Shivers has to drag her from the tent and onto her horse, lest the mercenaries decide to hand her over to Orso for the reward on her head.
