|“||I read once that rocks sometimes fall out of the sky. Some say they are fragments of the stars. Some say they are splinters, flung out from the chaos of hell. Dangerous to touch. Terribly cold.||”|
Chapter Summary Edit
Glokta has yet another dream, this time of dancing with Ardee West, while Adeptus Kandelau examines the remains of the mauled foot. Feeling the dream was telling him something, the next day he goes to the University. Sitting with the Adeptus Historical, minus his now dead crow, Glokta asks about The Seed. The scholar knows very little, chalking it up to a metaphor or a meteor that fell from the sky. He admits he’s no expert, but there were once many books in the library from that era, but they were all taken some time ago, by someone Glokta knows well.
Before Glokta can learn who, they are interrupted by the University Administrator, and Superior Goyle. As Glokta considers resisting Goyle’s order to leave and not come back, Practical Vitari dissuades him. What is Goyle up to in the University?
Back at his chambers, as Glokta enters, he’s quickly pounched on by an unseen figure, who drags him to the bathroom and dunks him in his filthy bathwater. It’s Ferro. After some amount of posturing, they agree to exchange questions. Ferro wants to know why Glokta has been having her watched, and he explains he’s after Bayaz, not her. He asks her about The Seed. She asks about Eaters. He wants to know what Bayaz is trying to accomplish. In the end, they learn little. As Ferro gets up to leave, Glokta fears his life is about to be ended, but she surprises him by leaving him alive.
