Chapter Summary Edit
In the black of night, Glokta waits in the streets of ravaged Adua. Out of the shadows emerges Nicomo Cosca, with an ugly band of ne'er-do-well mercenaries.1 Bidding them wait, Glokta knocks on the door of Ardee’s home. She needs to leave, no longer safe from Arch Lector Sult's vengeance. The moment Cosca laying eyes on the woman, he sweeps off his elaborate hat, and declares himself in love.
Arriving at the dilapidated mansion, they find Severard and Frost waiting outside. The mercenaries immediately spread out, and surround Severard. Glokta no longer trusts the man, and it is time to find out the truth. Practical Frost clamps down on him, and takes him downstairs. Before following, Glokta orders Cosca and his men to prepare for the men the Arch Lector has sent to kill him, who should be greeted with the courtesy they deserve.
Ardee follows Glokta into the depths, where they find Brother Longfoot still calling for his freedom. Ignoring him, Glokta suggests Ardee wait here while he's working. Inside, Glokta begins to chop off fingers, denying his old friends pleas for mercy. Soon the former Practical tells all. He has been informing Valint & Balk of all Glokta’s doings. However, Glokta wants more, what did Severard tell the Arch Lector? He insists nothing, he's never even spoken to the Arch Lector. And the thing is, Glokta believes him. Then who? Catching Practical Frost’s eye, he realises the truth.2 Frost casually breaks Severard’s neck, and turns on the torturer. However, Ardee hears the disturbance, and with her help and a blade hidden in his cane, they kill the giant albino. Moments later, Cosca enters looking around in bewildered awe, and announces that Sult thugs are all dead.
Glokta declares that they're going to the Agriont to confront Sult. However outside, the Gurkish have finally broken through into the inner city. So Glokta offers Brother Longfoot a chance to earn his freedom, by leading them through the sewers to the House of Questions.
