“ | True. But isn’t it getting a little late in the day for your papers and so forth anyway? The Gurkish are coming, remember? If you’ve scores to settle, get them settled now, before our Kantic friends tear up all the bills. When plans fail, swift action must serve, eh, Superior? Time to laugh in your enemy’s face! | ” |
Sacrifices is the forty-fifth chapter in Last Argument of Kings.
Chapter Summary[]
Logen and his men enter the city, where confusion reigns among the Union Army. Without an assigned objective, Ninefingers decides to press on toward the Agriont. As they walk, The Dogman falls back to urge Shivers to forget his beef with Logen, but the young man wonders if it is possible.
In the sewers beneath the city, Glokta reaches the exit near the House of Questions. As payment for his guidance, Brother Longfoot pleads for his freedom. The Inquisitor agrees, what harm could there be in it? Glokta then orders Cosca and his men to change their clothes in order to resemble Practicals of the Inquisition. Ardee will act as their prisoner.
At the docks, Lord Marshall West is finding the chaos of the battle impossible to coordinate, reduced to simply looking the part. What’s more, he cannot make contact with General Poulder. In the harbour the battle rages, marked by Union and Gurkish ships, but also another unfamiliar fleet. The largest of those ships sits at the docks, and disembarking from it a group of black clad guards. In their midst is magnificent nobleman. He marches straight up to West and announces himself as Grand Duke Orso of Talins, here to protect his daughter the Queen. He offers the Lord Marshall ten-thousand of his best troops and assures him the western district will no longer be a concern. As the Grand Duke leaves, General Poulder finally arrives – dead, having been at the front of his bold charge.
Meanwhile, Glokta barges into the Arch Lector Sult’s office, ignoring the protests of his master’s assistant. Inside, Superior Goyle sits at the Arch Lector’s desk, trying out the large chair for size. Glokta immediately orders Goyle bound and sets to work on him by nailing his forearms to the desk. Goyle’s trousers are barely around his ankles, when he admits that Sult is at the University. Sult has been working the Adeptus Demonic, Administrator Silber, on occult rituals to contact The Other Side. They plan to bring the Demons through and send them against Bayaz and the King. With the Superior’s confession in hand, Glokta marches off to the High Justice.
Atop the Tower of Chains, Jezal paces. Below them in the square, the Gurkish continue to advance. Amongst the horde, curious figures move wearing pearly white armour edged in gold. As barrels of blasting-powder are rolled towards the Agriont wall, Marovia urges Jezal to retire inside. Things are about to get a whole lot worse.
At the High Justice’s office, Glokta attempts to present Goyle’s confession to his third suitor. However inside, Marovia’s body parts are cast about the office, gnawed here and there, and preserved in ice. Cosca sidles up to the despondent Inquisitor, and urges him that now is the time to be laughing in his enemy's face. And off they march to the University.
