Chapter Summary Edit
Friendly is making dinner for everyone, left out as the others plan the killing of Ario and Foscar. Obviously they’ll be well guarded so they’re going to need more men; hired killers in the guise of entertainers. Meanwhile, Morveer and Cosca have taken an instant mutual dislike for each other, and make snide comments throughout. Cosca is no better with Monza, recalling how she once betrayed him to take the Captain General’s chair of The Thousand Swords. Meanwhile Monza adds to this happy bunch, trying to stay aloof from the others, to assert her authority.
The next day, Shivers, Cosca and Vitari are in a draughty warehouse hiring twenty-five bad men for Cardotti’s: a band with weapons hidden in their instruments; a massive Northman to act out the duel between Fenris the Feared and the Bloody-Nine; a fire breather; and some tumblers and knife-artists.
All Monzas crew, except Morveer and Day, watch from the roof as the attendees of the peace conference parade through the city. First comes Sotorius of Sipani the host. Then the remains of the leaders of The League of Eight: Rogont of Ospria, and Salier of Visserine. Followed by the junior members of the League: Lirozio of Puranti, Cotarda of Affoia, Patine of Nicante. Next come King Jezal and Queen Terez of The Union, looking like young gods. And finally come Ario and Foscar, representing their father. The parade over, when the others leave, Shivers tries to repair things with Monza, but she coldly brushes him off.
