Tactics and Rest and Recreation are the twenty-fourth and twenty-fifth chapters of The Heroes.
Chapter Summary Edit
Finree makes her way to a dilapidated farm cottage where her father has made his headquarters. Inside, Lord Marshal Kroy is just starting his command meeting, when the officers suddenly part to allow Bayaz through. When Bayaz settles-in for the meeting with a cup of tea, Finree asks him for a cup herself; she hates tea, but can’t miss an opportunity to bring herself to the attention of the most powerful man in The Union. As Bayaz fixes his death glare on the Lord Marshal after the days defeat, the planning meeting begins.
Meanwhile, Black Dow has also gathered his war council around a fire-pit in the centre of The Heroes. Dow lays out the plan for the second day – Scale, Reachey and Ironhead will form the front line, holding the Old Bridge, Osrung, and the shallows, with Tenways and Golden held back to give help to either. However, the otherwise festive mood is clouded when Calder steps up to speak. He urges Dow to make peace with The Union; Calder knows the war is far from won, and schemes to be the voice of reason should the war turn against the Northmen. Dow quickly turns his ire on Calder for spoiling his party.
Back in The Union headquarters, Bremer dan Gorst observes the command meeting where Marshal Kroy orders Lord Governor Meed to take back the Osrung, while General Mitterick must force his way across the Old Bridge and establish a presence on the far side. As the meeting breaks up, Gorst comes face to face with Finree, and finds that despite the news of her marriage, his feelings for her are as strong as ever.
With everyone else departed, Finree ties to comfort her dispirited father, while simultaneously urging him to promote her husband. However, she quickly realises that she’s not helping. Leaving to return to Governor Meed’s camp, she finds Gorst waiting, who offers to escort her back.
After the meeting in the Northmen camp, Calder tries to wheedle his way into Glama Golden's favour using his towering vanity against him, but gets nowhere. He then tries the same with Ironhead but only ends up with piss on his boots.
After leaving Finree, Gorst goes to visit a whore, while fantasising about being with Finree. However, the whore speaks before he’s done, breaking him out of his daydream. He trudges from the tent, chocked with longing and self-hatred.
