Teeth and Fingers is the fifth chapter in The Blade Itself.
Chapter Summary[]
Glokta, assisted by Severard and Practical Frost, interrogates Sepp dan Teufel, the Master of the Royal Mints. The scene commences with Teufel's face being unveiled, revealing bruises from prior rough handling. Teufel, enraged and bewildered, demands an explanation, asserting his high-ranking position. Glokta, unfazed, retorts sarcastically, making it clear that they are well aware of his identity.
The atmosphere in the room becomes increasingly menacing with the presence of glowing irons and a polished cleaver, which catches Teufel's attention. Glokta observes Teufel's right-handedness as he shoves away the confession paper, making a mental note of it. Teufel recognizes Glokta as Sand dan Glokta, a tortured war captive, and threatens him with the repercussions from High Justice Marovia.
Untroubled, Glokta reveals his tortured past by showing Teufel his disfigured teeth, explaining the excruciating process of their removal. He further elaborates on his daily sufferings, emphasizing his fearlessness towards any threats Teufel might pose. Glokta then urges Teufel to confess to expedite his transfer to Angland, but Teufel remains defiant.
The situation escalates drastically as Glokta orders his men to restrain Teufel. He then proceeds to methodically chop off the tips of Teufel's fingers using the cleaver, each refusal to confess resulting in another chop. Severard and Practical Frost assist Glokta in this horrifying act, with Severard expressing admiration for Glokta's precision. The torture continues until Teufel, now in excruciating pain and fear, finally breaks and agrees to confess.1
