|“||This is not it. This is just a stone!||”|
Chapter Summary Edit
The boat crunches into the desolate rocky beach of Shabulyan, the island at the edge of the world. While Bayaz and his companions disembark, Cawneil’s crew refuse to join them, fearing of the island’s reputation.
With the wind blowing and cold seeping in, they find shelter in a cave at the base of the cliffs that is suitable to their needs. Huddled around a meagre first, Bayaz brings out the Maker’s box and a flask of liquor to offer to the Spirit. Logen blows a mist of the liquid into the flame and a moments later the Spirit appears, and offers Ferro the stone from its stomach, entrusted to it by Juvens centuries ago. Its duty done, the Spirit fades away.
Bayaz investigates the stone in Ferro’s hand, and flies into a rage. This is not The Seed, but a trick of Kanedias to keep the power for himself.1 Quai is shaken by the news. Ferro is angry for her lost vengeance. Logen is resigned to life’s vagaries. Jezal is confused, but happy to be going home. Bayaz declares the journey a failure and stomps back to the boat.
Back aboard the boat, Logen and Ferro consider their future. Neither is capable of making the first move and taking what pleasure they can in one another, rather they turn to bitterness and drive each other away.2 Hope is for the weak.

- And so the quest is a failure. Anti-climax? Gut-punch? Nah, I say Abercrombie is a genius.
- We want Logen and Ferro to make it work so badly. They both desperately want to change, but they just can't, especially Ferro.
