–Ardee West on The Fall of the Master Maker
Chapter Summary Edit
Arriving at fencing practice, Jezal dan Luthar is less than surprised to find Inquisitor Glokta waiting for him. Varuz is busy today and Glokta just wants a little chat. He asks him simply why he entered The Contest? Jezal tries to fob him off with bland answers - for country, for honour, for family. Recognising himself in Jezal, Glokta tells him the blunt truth; that everyone fences for recognition and their own personal advancement. He goads him that if he quits no one will suffer but himself.
Almost ready to quit, Jezal stalks off annoyed with the interference. With no Varuz to train him and some free time on his hands, Jezal wanders the streets. He runs into Yoru Sulfur, who introduces himself and comments on his fencing. When Jezal mentions thinking about giving up, the stranger reacts with outraged.
Confused, Captain Jezal seeks sympathy from Major West. In his rooms, he finds Ardee who is a little drunk. After a little banter, he admits he intends to quit fencing. Ardee reacts by busting into laughter and mocking him. If he quits, she will win a bet with her brother.
Luthar storms off, angry, embarrassed, and determined to prove Ardee wrong. He strides off with a reinvigorated commitment to win The Contest.
