|“||Oh, I feel sure we shall meet again.||”|
Chapter Summary Edit
Bayaz, Jezal, Logen, Ferro, Quai, and Longfoot sail into Adua harbour after their long and arduous adventure. Their return brings the moment of parting for Logen who is returning to The North. What reason does he have to stay? Ferro makes it clear he has none at all. Clearly hurt, Logen exchanges a long hug with Jezal, who will miss the barbarian.
The rest follow Bayaz into the city. As they walk, Bayaz asks what Jezal’s plans are now, and he figures he’ll be destined for war in The North. The conversation is interrupted by a commotion caused by three members of the city’s guard abusing a beggar. Recognizing he would never have done this before, Jezal does the right thing and intercedes on the woman’s behalf, forcing the guards to back off. As they do so, Bayaz loudly and publically proclaims Jezal’s righteousness. When Jezal reprimands the Magus, he just smiles knowingly. As the pair part ways, Bayaz assures Jezal they’ll meet again.
He should seek out Varuz to report for duty, but instead he goes to see Ardee, leaving his gilt dress sword behind; the trappings of his old life no longer matter to him. Outside Ardee’s home, Jezal paces back and forth working up the courage to knock. As the servant ushers him inside, her eyes grow big in recognition at mention of his name. When Ardee appears, he finds himself barely able to form sentences. After catching up on recent news around the world and Jezal’s supposed fame, Ardee takes command of the situation. She forces herself on him, in a rough and unromantic sexual encounter.1 In the awkward aftermath, Ardee begins to weep saying that no one really cares about her. Trying to sooth her, Jezal says he loves her; he wants to mean it, but the truth is, he doesn’t.
