|“||A person, unidentified, perhaps a man, perhaps a woman, either young or old, was attacked in the park by an unknown assailant, bitten to death within two hundred steps of the King’s palace and partially…eaten?||”|
Chapter Summary Edit
At night, Sand dan Glokta is startled awake by a mysterious figure in his room and an icy cold. A woman’s voice he doesn’t recognise, claiming not to be a woman at all, demands to know where The Seed is. When it becomes clear he doesn't know, she simply disappears, leaving Glokta disoriented about whether it was a dream.1
In the morning, Glokta and Severard investigate a mauled body that is found close to Bayaz’ room. They take the body to the University, for an explanation of the horrific wounds. On the way2, Severard explains that Valint & Balk are indeed very well-connected, and not to be messed with. The Adeptus Physical examined the body, but it is mauled beyond hope of identifying the victim. Kandelau concludes that the cause of death is extraordinarily human bites and partial consumption.
Suddenly they are interrupted by the arrival of Superior Goyle and his three Practicals. Goyle immediately starts throwing him weight around.3 His dismisses the Adeptus Physical’s conclusion, and pronounce the death caused by a dog attack.

- Is Glokta’s visitor is the same visitor who paid Logen a visit in Sore Thumb? She knows about The Seed and the happenings on the night Kanedias died. It's also curious that the morning after the woman’s appearance, Glokta and Severard find a body that’s be partially eaten.
- Glokta also comments on Gorst on their walk, referring to his as the logical next step in the evolution of fencing, brutish, efficient and relentless.
- As we learned in Questions Glokta and Goyle hate each other since Glokta's time in Angland.
