Chapter Summary Edit
Logen, Bayaz, and Malacus Quai arrive in Adua. Logen is completely dumbfounded having never seen such a huge city or even imagined one existed. While Bayaz leads them through the crowded and stinking city, as stranger to all of this, Logen can see the ugly truth under the surface of the arrogant Union. There is a massive gap between the rich and the poor, with the poor being badly mistreated. The soldiers preparing to march to war in The North are of very poor quality.
Bayaz takes them to a theatrical costume shop. There, they acquire the appropriate garb to make Bayaz and Quai look more like a proper Magi, and Logen like a barbarian prince. To regain his place on the Closed Council, appearances are everything to the powerful of The Union.1

- This chapter comes soon after Glokta discovers that supposed wealth of the Mercers is a myth. More evidence that The Union is a little too concerned with style over substance.
