Chapter Summary Edit
Glokta enters the banking hall of Valint & Balk, cool and shadowy despite of the hot summer sun. He sees no gold or wealth, just pens, ink, and reams of paper. Even the bankers themselves are plain, unlike the Mercers or Spicers who flaunted their wealth. Glokta approaches a clerk, and bluntly demands to see Mauthis. The clerk is taken aback, but leads the cripple to his office.
Inside, Mauthis sits behind a huge desk, examining and signing papers. One he rejects and declares the dues must be paid in full immediately. Turning his attention to the Superior, the pair begin to discuss the new demands of Glokta. The bank is not pleased with his investigation into Bayaz and King Jezal, and wishes it to stop. When Glokta protests that he must comply with the Arch Lector’s orders, Mauthis just shrugs. Caught between a rock and a hard place, Glokta asks when this will end. Mauthis, seeming to draw from his own experience, whispers almost sympathetically that it will never end. And, there is one more thing. Valint & Balk wish Glokta to spy on the Arch Lector directly, and find out what he’s up to in the University. Sputtering with impotent objections, Glokta is shown the door.
As he leaves, Glokta wonders how the banking house knows about his investigation. Obviously, someone close to him must have told them.
