|“||Should’ve been you.||”|
Chapter Summary Edit
The next morning, Cosca sits at a sumptuous breakfast table with Duke Salier and Monza, not able to eat anything after the horrors of the day before. Monza is also sullen and unresponsive. Only Salier seems to enjoy his breakfast, chatting away about the great men and women who he’s entertained in this hall, and the sad plight Visserine finds itself in now.
Seeing his guests have no appetite, he takes them on a tour of his art collection from all over the Circle of the World, chattering all the way. When Salier muses about what's to be done, Monza blocks his path and asks him to help her kill Ganmark. Cosca marvels at her resilience, but Salier just says he’ll think about it. They are interrupted by an officer from the frontline, who reports that the Talinese have breached the city. Salier blithely tells him to return to the front and fight to the last man.
Meanwhile, in a fever dream Shivers sees Fenris the Feared, Bethod, his father and brother, Tul Duru, Black Dow, Dogman, and even the Bloody-Nine. He wakes screaming in agony, with Monza at his bedside. As she gives him her husk pipe for his pain and he drifts into stupor, he whispers to Monza “Should’ve been you.”
