Chapter Summary Edit
Somewhere in the deserts of Gurkhul, a woman is digging graves for three of her dead crew, despite the fact that she despised them. She is the only survivor of a fight between some Gurkish soldiers and her crew of escaped slaves and bandits.
Suddenly, a voice calls, “Ferro Maljinn! . . . I know who you are!” She reacts immediately by firing two arrows at the old man. Despite her prodigious skill with a bow, Ferro misses, the arrows seeming to curve in the air. She then attacks him with her dagger, but again inexplicably misses him. Reasoning that magic is at work and the man may be a Gurkish Eater2, Ferro decides to talk instead.
The old man introduces himself as Yulwei, and assures her he is not an Eater. He offers to help evade the soldiers and Eaters trailing her. Realizing that without his help she will be caught, she accepts his help in exchange for a future favour.
That night, Yulwei leads Ferro straight through the Gurkish soldier’s encampment. Despite the fact that they walk close enough to hear the soldier’s conversations, the Gurkish cannot see or hear them.3
Locations and Term Edit
|Gurkhul||The Gurkish Empire||Magic||Eaters||Order of the Magi|
- This phrase really captures Ferro well. She’d cut her throat to spite someone, but at the same time she honors her dead companions even though she despised them.
- Eaters are mentioned for the first time, straight after the chapter that mentions The Second Law.
- Curiously, Yulwei never seems to experience the kind of shakes Bayaz does after using magic.
