What War? is the fifth chapter of The Heroes.1
Chapter Summary[]
Curnden Craw looks out from The Heroes over the sunny valley of Osrung, and the three passes over the river: the Old Bridge in the west near the bogs; the new bridge in the town of Osrung in the east; and the shallows at the bottom of the hill in the centre. Nevertheless, everything remains tranquil for now.
Jaded, world weary, and in contemplative mood, Craw muses on his life, and the decision he made years ago not to marry a woman called Colwen, but to become a warrior. Suddenly, Agrick rushes over to announce that Drofd has returned from Carleon, and he’s not alone; Caul Shivers is with him. Shivers makes his way into camp, manifesting his terrible pitiless menace, and announces in his whispery croak that he’s here to make sure Craw holds onto this hilltop.
