Chapter Summary Edit
Inquisitor Glokta attends today’s bout of The Contest, and wins long odds when Bremer dan Gorst annihilates his latest opponent. While the crowd only see Gorst as a brute, Glokta recognises that despite his dockside appearance he has impressive speed and accuracy.
Afterwards, he goes to the University, a neglected building in the shadow of the House of the Maker. Glokta is surprised by the warm welcome he gets from the Adepti, who invite him to dinner. The five aged men, each with their own specialty, seem surprisingly familiar with Arch Lector Sult, and enquire whether they will receive more funds now that the Mercers’ assets have been seized.
In a private meeting with the master of chemicals, Glokta seeks a mundane explanation for the explosion in Bayaz’ room. The Adeptus demonstrates gunpowder, but Glokta is disappointed, since the smoke, the smell, and the amount that would be needed rule it out.
Next, Glokta speaks with the ancient master of history.2 The Adeptus knows quite a bit about Bayaz3, and rambles on about Bayaz’ role in the founding of The Union, The Seed, and involvement in the fall of Kanedias. Glokta’s attention is draw to one fact; the First of the Magi has the only key to the House of the Maker. Glokta leaves the University satisfied, with the kernel of a plan; if the man claiming to be Bayaz cannot produce the key, then he must be a fraud.

- Just a hunch, but this door might play a role later.
- "Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it". Is this part of the problem with The Union.
- Bayaz's name was given to him by Juvens, and is actually the first letter in the alphabet of the old tongue. I wonder what his real name is?
